Reiki

“Reiki is an invitation to wellness.”

-Pamela Miles

If you were drawn to this page, you may already be familiar with Reiki, an energy healing modality that was originally created by Japanese spiritual teacher and healer Mikao Usui, who lived in Japan between 1865 and 1926. Reiki (from Rei, meaning spiritual or sacred, and Ki, meaning energy) is a gentle physical therapeutic practice, as well as a system of healing and spiritual development.

Reiki is a practice that can help us find balance and improve our functioning in many ways. Reiki is beneficial to everyone, regardless of age or health status. For most people, Reiki treatments reduce stress, discomfort, and pain, and provide relaxation, an improved sense of well-being, and mental clarity. While the experience of a Reiki treatment (as well as its effects) will vary from person to person, nearly everyone reports feeling better afterward.

Reiki is not a belief system, a medical treatment, or a religion. You do not have to change your current belief system or subscribe to any particular theory in order to benefit from Reiki treatments. To the contrary, Reiki is an effective complement to any eastern or western medical treatment, psychotherapy, massage, meditation practice, or spiritual discipline. Additionally, Reiki is accessible to ALL people, ALL body types/shapes/sizes, and ALL genders, especially in my practice. Simply put? Reiki is good for you!

What does a Reiki session look like?

Reiki appointments are 90 minutes long.  We will spend the first part of your appointment discussing your history, any particular concerns you might have, and what you would like to focus on in your session. The Reiki treatment itself is usually 60 minutes long.

Reiki treatments are given while you lie comfortably on a massage table, fully clothed, with your eyes closed. Reiki is transmitted through light touch on various points of the body, many of which correspond to energy centers known as chakras. A full treatment usually involves multiple hand placements on both the front and back of the body, depending on what your stated needs are. You may also elect to have a ‘hands off’ Reiki treatment. Reiki sessions are intentionally quiet, with calming music in the background; however, I may talk to you briefly about something I’m noticing, or check in with you about what you’re experiencing.

Why should I try Reiki?

To me, Reiki is an opening…I feel calmer, clearer, and more peaceful and balanced after a Reiki treatment. Reiki is like a door into a deeper understanding of yourself, and a deeper connection to your spirit and your purpose. I believe it is a wonderful complement to therapy, but Reiki is also healing and empowering on its own.
